White Flip Ultra HD Review
Cisco made a recent announcement that they are going to retire the entire lineup of Flip Video devices due to rising number of competing camera phones. This means that devices like the white Flip Ultra HD will be a rarity one day and you should not count out the amazing features that this pocket video camera brought to the table. In fact, the Flip Ultra HD offers plenty of nice features without piling up on negatives. Here are some of the features that are worth noting so you can be among the last buyers of Flip Video products.

High Definition Power
Many modern handheld digital camcorders have the ability to record 1080p or Full HD video. But considering the small form factor of the white Flip Ultra HD, the ability to record 720p video is surprising. 720p is still a good resolution as it looks impressive even on the 1080p displays. Combined with the smaller file sizes and 16:9 widescreen ratio, 720p may actually be better for some people. It is the 60 frames per second that counts more because that ensures smooth video playback. The white Flip Ultra HD also has the necessary storage space with 8 GB of memory built into the compact device so you can record up to 2 hours of HD video without the need for memory cards.
Very Newbie Friendly
Its easy usability is what separates this compact video camera from much of the competition. There is a red button on the middle of the device that immediately records 720p video at 60fps the moment it is pressed. Navigating through the interface isn’t very difficult and the slim design allows for easy handling. Once you recorded enough video, you can do plenty of things immediately such as playing the video back on its small display. The Ultra HD version is treated with image stabilization features so even new users can record blur-free video with minimal effort.

| The Ultra HD has always been my favorite because of its size. I think the bigger it is the better control you will have and the less shaky video you will produce. The new Ultra HD is smaller, but not that much. It feels good in your hands. The controls and the screen are in the same place. It is a nice fit in your hand.I was very shocked at how well the image stabilization worked. If you have used a flip before this one you know that the slightest movement will create shaky video. You can tell that this one has image stabilization. It still can produce shaky video but it might take a big jolt to do it. The 60 fps was great. It was much clearer video and with the image stabilization it made everything much smoother and clearer in the view finder, even in low light situations. I did check when I got home and the 60fps does import right into Final Cut Pro for editing without any compression. (Probably cause the videos are in MP4 format)Overall I think this is the best Flip Camera out on the market. I like this one better than the Mino because of the touch screen controls. Sometimes pressing the touch screen controls on the Mino will cause the camera to shake.I hope this review was helpful. Please feel free to leave comments or questions. |
The device has a built-in USB arm so you won’t have to find a cable just to hook up the device to your PC or Mac. It is best to install the FlipShare software so you can easily transfer and catalog the videos that you have recorded. You can also perform some basic video edits or make video greeting cards or other custom movies that you can later share online. FlipShare comes with a special feature that lets you make Flip Channels so you can share larger videos through email without attachments. It also has Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter integration to make content sharing even easier. If you have the Flip Video HDMI Micro Cable, you may also connect the white Flip Ultra HD to your HDTV and watch any videos on the large display.
Bottom Line
Although the available memory is enough for 2 hours of HD video, the battery life is slightly less than 2 hours. The microphone is also not fully optimized for capturing clear audio. However, these are only minor issues on a product that is strong on the fields that matter like video quality and ease of use. These positive strengths are enough for the white Flip Ultra HD to earn a recommendation for newbies and even enthusiasts that need something compact.
