About Petorka
Petorka is an independent European basketball analytics project built to make advanced basketball data easier to explore, understand and put in context.
The goal is not to reduce players or teams to one number. Basketball is too interconnected for that. Petorka is designed to show different parts of the same picture — production, impact, shooting, team performance, lineup combinations and the context surrounding them.
Why Petorka exists
High-level basketball analysis has become increasingly sophisticated, but the public tools available for European basketball remain fragmented. Player statistics may exist in one place, lineup information somewhere else, while more advanced impact analysis may not be publicly available at all.
Petorka was built to bring those pieces together.
The aim is simple: create a public basketball research tool that makes it easier to ask better questions about players, teams and the game itself.
Why the name Petorka?
Petorka is a Balkan basketball term for a five-player unit — the five players on the floor together.
The name reflects how the project approaches basketball. Individual statistics matter, but players do not operate in isolation. Their impact depends on teammates, opponents, lineups, roles and the environment around them.
What Petorka measures
Production
What players and teams directly record.
Shooting
Where shots come from, patterns of assisted and unassisted scoring, and how efficiently shots are converted.
Impact
How team performance changes with specific players on the floor, including adjusted models designed to account for teammates and opponents.
Lineups
How player combinations perform together.
Teams
Efficiency, shot profile, style and opponent context.
Officials
Descriptive referee and crew tendencies across seasons.
Our approach
Petorka tries to distinguish between measurement and interpretation.
Some statistics are straightforward descriptions of what happened. Others are estimates produced by statistical models. Those are not the same thing, and they should not be presented as if they are.
Where appropriate, Petorka includes qualification thresholds, percentiles and reliability information so that noisy or limited samples are not treated with the same confidence as stronger signals.
Data & methodology
The underlying database is reconstructed from publicly available game, play-by-play, box-score and related basketball data and processed through a multi-stage validation pipeline.
Some metrics shown on Petorka are direct calculations from those records. Others — particularly adjusted player-impact metrics — are models developed specifically for this project.
Petorka currently covers three EuroLeague seasons: 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26. Petorka is designed to support additional European competitions over time.
Limitations
Basketball data is imperfect, and statistical models are estimates rather than ground truth.
Small samples, lineup context, role changes, injuries, coaching decisions and data limitations can all affect the numbers shown here. Reliability indicators and qualification rules are included where possible to make those limitations visible rather than hide them.
Independent project
Petorka is an independent basketball analytics project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any league, club or governing body.
Created by Garrett Guess
Petorka began as a personal basketball analytics project and grew into a multi-season research platform covering players, teams, lineups and officials.
